Couples can often benefit from help to deal with specific problems affecting their relationship and preventing them from connecting with each other. These problems might involve difficulties in communicating, in understanding each other's needs, in getting along and resolving conflicts.
Couples unfortunately often wait until their problems become serious before consulting a therapist. This is not necessary, nor is it advisable. I work with couples who are at the early stages of their relationship, as well as those who have been together for many years. It is never too early to consult. If you love each other, and recognize problems or patterns emerging early on, do not hesitate to make an appointment.
Ideally, both partners attend sessions. However sometimes one partner is reluctant or refuses. In such cases, I am willing to work with one of the individuals.
In many cases individuals feel ambivalent about staying in their relationship. I help such individuals find the best path.
The couple therapies I refer to are Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFT) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). Goals include helping partners develop better ways of communicating, developing greater compassion, empathy and understanding, while making concrete changes when needed.
